“And Hiram king of Tyre sent his servants to Solomon, for he had heard that they had anointed him king in place of his father, for Hiram was ever a lover of David.”
1 Kings 5:15

Why Hiram

Solomon had a purpose: “to build a house for the name of the Lord my God.” He knew his own people could not do it alone, “for there is not among us any who is skilled to hew timber like the Zidonians.” So he sent to Hiram, king of Tyre.

Hiram answered with joy, “I will do all your desires concerning cedar wood, and concerning cypress wood.” His servants brought the timber down from Lebanon and floated it by sea; there was peace between the two kings, and they made a covenant. Then “Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders” hewed the stone together, “and they prepared the timber and the stones to build the house.”

A great purpose, and the craftsmen who could make it real, gathered from every place they worked. That is the Hiram Guild: the woodworkers, metalworkers, potters, glass artists, stone carvers, upholsterers and weavers whose hands turn designs into things, found in one place, so every purpose can find its makers.
